Factoring
The purchase of debts owed, or "accounts receivable," in exchange for immediate payment at a discount In e-commerce, the term is often applied to ISOs that offer to process credit card transactions through their own merchant account, rather than through an account established by the merchant, in exchange for a percentage of the transaction or other fee. Factoring of credit card debt is illegal.

FDDI / Fiber Distributed Data Interface
An American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-specified standard for fiber optic links with data rates up to 100 Mbit/s

FDM / Frequency-Division Multiplexing
FDM is a scheme in which numerous signals are combined for transmission on a single communications line or channel. Each signal is assigned a different frequency (sub channel) within the main channel.

Fiber Optic
A fine glass fiber that transmits light, sometimes known as optical fiber or just fiber. Fiber optic cables transmit data much faster than copper wires and are much less susceptible to electromagnetic interference.

Filename extension
Last three or four letters of a file name that appear after the dot Used to designate the type of file and the format used

File Server
A computer responsible for the central storage and management of data files that can be accessed by other computers on the same network.

Filter
A program (or part of a program) that examines a message for specified criteria and then processes it accordingly. A good example is represented by the rules in many e-mail packages that allow a user to determine what happens to each incoming mail message.

Finger
A program for determining the name associated with an e-mail address originally developed as part of BSD (Berkeley System Distribution) variant of UNIX. Finger programs can either be run on a local computer or be accessed via one of many finger Gateways on the Internet.

Firewall
A system composed of both hardware and software that enforces access control between two networks, usually between a private Local Area Network and the public Internet.

Flame
An abusive communication from a fellow Internet user, usually in a newsgroup but sometimes by e-mail or in a chat forum. Many things can trigger a flame.

Frame Relay
A fast packet switching protocol Used mainly in Wide Area Networks. It differs from ATM in that packets can have variable length

Form
An HTML file containing ordinary content and "fields" that can be filled in by users to interact with a Web server. The input in a Web form is interpreted by a corresponding program using CGI, the Common Gateway Interface. Forms can send all kinds of information back to a Web server, which can be processed on the server to do anything -- search a database, add a user to a catalogue or subscriber list, make a purchase with a credit card, or run another program on the server remotely. Web search engines and directories use forms for taking user input, processing the request, and then sending back the requested information.

Forward DNS lookup
Forward DNS lookup is using an Internet domain name to find an IP address.

FpML / Financial Products Markup Language
FpML is a business information exchange standard based on XML that enables business-to-business over-the-counter financial derivative transactions using the Internet.

FPU
Floating Point Unit A part of the computer responsible for high precision mathematical operations

Fragment
A Fragment is a piece of a packet. When a router is forwarding an IP packet to a network that has a maximum packet size smaller than the packet size, it is forced to break up that packet into multiple fragments. These fragments will be reassembled by the IP layer at the destination host.

Frame
A group of bits including data plus one or more addresses and other protocol control information. Generally it is a block of variable length identified by a label at a link layer (layer 2 of the OSI reference model, i.e. an HDLC block).

Frame Relay
A high-speed packet-switched network protocol, often used in local and wide area networks.

Flame War
When an online discussion degenerates into a series of personal attacks against the debaters, rather than discussion of their positions A heated exchange

Free Software Foundation
An organization dedicated to eliminating restrictions on copying, redistribution and modification of computer software.

Free mail
Any form of free E-Mail service, especially one that is web-based. Free mail services such as Hotmail and Rocket mail have been extremely successful as they enable anyone with access to a browser to have their own e-mail account.

Freeserve
A UK-based ISP that provides free Internet access to its subscribers Freeserve was founded in late 1998 by Dixons, a high-street retailing group.

FrontPage
Microsoft® FrontPage® is a site creation and management software tool. One of the most popular website creation software packages the software, both FrontPage® 98 and FrontPage ®2000 is widely supported by the hosting community

FrontPage Extension
FrontPage extensions are available on both Unix and NT in order for you to use the Microsoft FrontPage to build your web site.

FTP / File Transfer Protocol
A standard way for computers on the Internet to exchange files. Like HTTP, FTP programs use the TCP/IP protocols on which the Internet is based to manage the transmission of binary files from one place to another.

FTPmail
Using email messages to access the FTP sites. Requires a special software installed on the server

FTP Site
This is a server with an address on the internet that has been set up to use FTP to store and transfer files.
