Gateway
A device connecting different networks, especially those using different standards or protocols Gateways are an essential part of the Internet, as they allow systems that know nothing about each to other exchange information.
Gb / Gigabyte
One Gigabyte is equivalent to 1 billion bytes. 1 Kb=1024 bytes, 1Mb=1024Kb, 1Gb=1024Mb.
Gbps / Gigabits per second
This is refer to a measure of bandwidth capacity or transmission speed. It stands for a billion bits per second.
Geek
Traditionally, someone whose fascination for technology overwhelms all other pursuits, with all the negative stereotypes this implies; in short, a NERD.
Geocities
One of the best examples of community-building on a large scale on the Internet Geocities is home to thousands of individual websites, organized by "neighborhoods" with names such as Hollywood and SoHo .
Get
This is the FTP command for "getting", or downloading files from the server to the computer.
Ghost Site
A ghost site is a Web site that is no longer maintained but that remains available for viewing.
GIF / Graphics Interchange Format
GIF files are interlaced graphics files widely used on the Web, especially for simple computer-generated pictures and animations but also for digital photographs.
GIF89a
A GIF89a graphics file is an image formatted according to GIF Version 89a. One of the chief advantages of the format is the ability to create an animated image that can be played after transmitting to a viewer.
Gigabit Ethernet
Gigabit Ethernet is the Ethernet standard implementation that runs at 1000Mbps
Glue Record
A record in DNS to provide the IP address for a sub domain specified as elf-responsible via a previous NS record.
Gopher
A protocol used to find information on the Internet. Search programs such as Veronica consult Gopher Servers containing hierarchically organized information stored in text files, which can be referenced by subject.
GPRS
General Packet Radio Service is an enhancement of the GSM core network that introduces packet data transmission.
Grand Central Station
Agent software, developed by IBM, which continuously searches data sources for specified information that can be delivered to a PC or PDA.
Group Alias
A mail alias for a group of people; a mailing list It consists of the group alias or mailing list, a request alias for submission and resignation requests, and an owner alias for problems.
Groupware
Software that helps people work together more productively and share knowledge more efficiently.
GSM / Global System for Mobile communications
A standard for digital mobile telephones widely used in Europe . GSM and its variants are rapidly being adopted elsewhere in the world, especially in Asia and Australasia . It is used on the 900MHz and 1800Mhz frequencies in Europe , Asia and Australia , and the MHz 1900 frequency in North America and Latin America .
GTLD / Generic Top-Level Domain
A gTLD is the top-level domain name of an Internet address that identifies it generically as associated with some domain class, such as .com, .net, .org, .gov (U.S. government agencies), .mil (for the military), .edu and .int. For example, in the domain name, www.cyberlogichost.com, .com is the chosen gTLD. In addition to the gTLD, there is the ccTLD (country code top-level domain name) that identifies a specific national domicile for an address. (For instance, .fr for France and .sg for Singapore .)
GUI / Graphical User Interface
Pronounced "gooey". GUI is the general term for all windows and mouse-based user interfaces, such as Macintosh, Microsoft Windows, and Unix X-Windows. Graphical interfaces are distinguished from command line or shell interfaces.
