ICANN / Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is a private non-profit organization responsible for managing the systems and protocols that keep the Internet running.
ICQ / I seek you
Messaging software that lets people communicate electronically in real time; in effect, a chat program. ICQ (a contraction of I Seek You) has attracted millions of users, who can not only chat but also send files and URLS, play games and even communicate by video, either individually or as part of a group.
IE / Internet Explorer
Software for browsing the World Wide Web developed by MICROSOFT (see BROWSER).
IEEE / Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
The IEEE is an organization composed of engineers, scientists, and students. The IEEE is best known for developing standards for the computer and electronics industry. In particular, the IEEE 802 standards for local-area network are widely followed.
IETF / Internet Engineering Task Force
A group of people who make technical and other contributions to the engineering and evolution of the Internet and its technologies It is the principal body engaged in the development of new Internet Standard specifications.
IIS / Internet Information Server
Short for Internet Information Server, Microsoft's server software for Windows NT/2000
IKP / Internet Keyed Payment
A group of secure payment protocols created by IBM that let customers purchase goods and services securely over the Web.
Image
A picture stored in electronic form. Images that appear on Web pages are generally stored in one of the few formats that can be understood by a Web browser: GIF, JPEG or PNG. All of these formats use compression techniques to reduce the size of the image files and thus speed up download times.
Image Map
A clickable image used to help users navigate around and between websites. An image map is divided into several different hotspot areas, each of which is linked to another destination.
IMAP / Internet Message Access Protocol
A standard way of retrieving e-mail from a mail server. The main advantage of IMAP over older protocols such as POP3 is that users can manipulate remote mailboxes as if they were on a local machine.
IMHO
(In My Humble Opinion) -- A shorthand appended to a comment written in an online forum, IMHO indicates that the writer is aware that they are expressing a debatable view, probably on a subject already under discussion. One of may such shorthands in common use online, especially in discussion forums
Impression
A single instance of the display of a specific Web page or, more commonly, a banner advertisement. Impressions are measured by the number of requests from browsers for particular banners, as counted by specialized ad counters.
Increasing Returns
The idea that the more dominant a company becomes, the bigger its future advantage over competitors will be.
Index Server
An Index Server catalogues web site information to allow visitors to conduct a site search based on keywords. Index Server allows visitors with any browser to search a web site based on keywords by filling in the fields of an HTML query form.
Infomediary
An electronic intermediary that helps buyers and sellers do business one the Internet, usually by providing unique or exclusive information and services. There are many examples of infomediaries, the best-known being consumer-driven websites such as lastminute.com and EBAY.
Information Appliance
A device that connects to digital network or broadcast service for the purpose of gathering or distributing information After the telephone, the Internet-connected PC is the most common and useful information appliance.
Interlaced
Describes a characteristic of a graphic IMAGE, which enables alternating rows of the image to be displayed in separate passes as it downloads. A fuzzy but complete version of the image thus appears quickly in the browser and gets progressively sharper as the details are filled in.
Internet
Not to be confused with internet (with lowercase i). The word Internet refers to all the computer networks worldwide that are connected together. TCP/IP is the de facto standard protocol set for Internet
Internet Access
Internet access is usually made through a University Network or a commercial service provider
Internet backbone
An extremely fast network that connects major cities. Most often it utilizes T3 circuits and provides the bandwidth of 45Mbps
Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP)
A network control protocol running on top of the IP protocol. It is used by Internet hosts to maintain information related to multicast. All machines that want to use the multicast have to have the IGMP implemented
Internet Telephony
Techniques for transmitting voice and fax over the Internet. There are two ways of making telephone calls across the Internet. The first, which relies on the use of a PC, is especially attractive because it is essentially free, regardless of distance. The only charge is for the local call between the PC and an ISP - the same cost as any other dial-up Internet connection used for browsing the Web or sending e-mail. Special hardware and software compress and covert the sound of a voice (or a fax machine) into a binary file, which is then broken up into packets just as any other message would be. The PC at the recipient's end of the call then converts the packets back into an audible voice signal.
Internet Time
Time taken to get things done in the fast-moving Internet environment. Not a clearly-defined fraction of standard linear timescales, but nonetheless a measure of the fact that things happen faster on the Internet than in the real world.
Internet2
An experimental high-speed network. Formed in 1996 by a consortium of American universities, Internet2 was designed as a test bed for new networking technologies and applications, especially those needing very high speeds.
InterNIC
Until recently, the American organization responsible for registering and maintaining top-level domain names, in conjunction with Network Solutions.
Intranet
A network based on the same technical standards as the Internet, but designed for use within a single organization. Intranets are rapidly replacing proprietary networks in companies because they are generally simpler and cheaper to administer.
IP / Internet Protocol
Computer networking standard for addressing any computer on the Internet. The Internet Protocol defines how information travels between systems across the Internet. (see TCP/IP)
IP Address
The address of a particular computer on the Internet, used to identify it uniquely for communications purposes. Every computer that sends or receives information on the Internet must have an IP address, expressed as a 32-bit number, which is attached to every message has a return address to which it can reply if necessary. This is especially important on the Web, where a server must know exactly where to send back a requested page.
IP-filtering
A method to identify the suspicious visitor's domain name from its IP address and blocking it from accessing your web site or taking appropriate action.
IPO / Initial Public Offering
An American term for the first sale of publicly tradable shares by a company that has previously been privately owned, otherwise known as going public.
IPP
Internet Presence Provider, Another name for a hosting provider
IP packet
IP packet is the basic data chunk that can be sent over the Internet. All the data is partitioned into IP packets on the sending computer and reassembled on the receiving computer
IP-Spoofing
A technique used to gain unauthorized access to computers, whereby the intruder sends messages to a computer with an IP address indicating that the message is coming from a trusted port. To engage in IP spoofing, a hacker must first use a variety of techniques to find an IP address of a trusted port and then modify the packet headers so that it appears that the packets are coming from that port.
IPX
Internet Packet Exchange. A Novell's proprietary network protocol
IRC / Internet Relay Chat
A popular way of communicating on the Internet. Using special chat software, users connect to one of many chat servers around the world.
ISDN / Integrated Services Digital Network
Long touted as the next generation of high-bandwidth digital communications services, ISDN is still the most widely available alternative to the plain old telephone system (POTS) as a means of connecting to the Internet.
ISO / Independent Service Organization
A firm or organization which offers to process online credit card transactions, usually in exchange for transaction fees or a percentage of sales. Merchants must generally establish a merchant account before contracting for ISO services, although some ISOs claim not to require separate merchant accounts.
ISOC / Internet Society
A professional society concerned with the growth and evolution of the Internet, with the way it is used, and with related social, political, and technical issues.
ISP / Internet Service Provider
A company that provides direct connections to the Internet. ISPs form the gateway between the public telephone network and the Internet itself, and make it possible for anyone with a computer and a modem to gain access to a full set of Internet services.
ITU
(International Telecommunication Union ). (Formerly CCITT). Another international standards body concerned with telecommunications
